Day 1:
Lake Erie & Sunset on the Beach
Route: New York → Bellefonte → Erie, PA

Walk through Presque Isle State Park
Swimming and relaxing by the lake
Sunset Point — one of the most beautiful sunsets of the trip
Dinner at the iconic 1950s-style Sara’s Diner
Day 2:
Sand Dunes & Skyline Views
Route: Erie → Indiana Dunes National Park

Easy trail through panoramic dunes
Swimming and picnic at West Beach
Photo ops with Chicago’s skyline in the distance
Day 3:
The Long Haul & Surreal Road Art
Route: Indiana Dunes → Mitchell, SD

Scenic drive through fields, towns, and open prairie
Stop at Porter Sculpture Park — like a mini Burning Man
Giant metal heads, skeletal horses, and other surreal installations

Day 4:
Badlands, Dinosaurs & Presidential Peaks
Route: Mitchell → Badlands → Wall Drug → Mount Rushmore → Custer

Day 5:
Mountain Roads to Yellowstone’s Gate
Route: Custer → Shell Falls → Cody → Yellowstone

Shell Falls and a mountain pass nearly 10,000 ft up
Cody — a classic Western town
Supply stop before entering Yellowstone through a jaw-dropping scenic route
Day 6:
Yellowstone — Geysers, Rainbows & Wildlife
Route: Full day in Yellowstone

Grand Prismatic Spring — rainbow-colored hot spring
Old Faithful eruption and walk around Upper Geyser Basin
West Thumb geysers along Yellowstone Lake
Hayden Valley — bison sightings, maybe even bears
Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Artist Point viewpoint
Day 7:
Lava Trails & Oregon Charm
Route: Yellowstone → Craters of the Moon → Bend, OR

Alien-like volcanic landscapes at Craters of the Moon
Lava tubes, crater hikes, and lava fields
A long but scenic drive
Arrival in Bend — Oregon’s most charming adventure town
Day 8:
Rock Formations & Portland Finale
Route: Bend → Smith Rock State Park → Portland

Early morning hike at Smith Rock — canyon views and stillness
Option to walk Rim Trail or hike down to the river
Breakfast with one of Oregon’s best panoramic views
Arrival in Portland — trip ends beneath the Cascade Mountains
