Virginia & West Virginia RV Tour: Shenandoah & New River Gorge, 6 Days

The Appalachians in spring, one of the newest national parks in the US and a real adventure. We'll drive Skyline Drive through Shenandoah, hike down to waterfalls, see the bridge over the New River Gorge and reach the cliffs of Seneca Rocks. All in a comfortable RV, in great company.

Day-by-day program

Skyline Drive and the waterfalls of Shenandoah, the stone arch of Natural Bridge, the New River Gorge, Seneca Rocks and Harpers Ferry — six days of adventure in the Virginia mountains.

Day 1. New York → Shenandoah

In the morning we head south from New York. We enter Shenandoah National Park and drive Skyline Drive. Sunset at an overlook above the valley and a night at the campground.

Day 2. The waterfalls of Shenandoah

The trail to Dark Hollow Falls and a hike up Stony Man for a panorama of the Blue Ridge. A picnic in Big Meadows, where deer come out in the evening. Overnight in the park.

Day 3. Natural Bridge → New River Gorge

Natural Bridge — a 215-ft stone arch that Thomas Jefferson once bought. We drive on to West Virginia and the New River Gorge. Overnight at a campground near the park.

Day 4. New River Gorge

An overlook facing the famous arch bridge over the gorge. The Endless Wall Trail along the cliffs above the river. Optional — rafting on the New River or the Bridge Walk on the catwalk beneath the span (paid separately). In the evening — a campfire at the campground.

Day 5. Seneca Rocks and Blackwater Falls

Seneca Rocks — jagged stone fins above the valley and a trail up to the lookout. Blackwater Falls, with water stained dark by peat. Overnight in the mountains.

Day 6. Harpers Ferry and the road home

Harpers Ferry — a historic town where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet. A walk through the old streets and the view from Jefferson Rock. In the evening we return to New York.
